What is a Tax Abatement?

A tax abatement is a reduction of taxes granted by a government to encourage economic development. The most common type of tax abatement is a property tax abatement granted to a business as an incentive to come to a city or expand existing operations within the city. Tax abatements last for a defined period for owners to invest additional capital in the business.

West Hollywood does not need to attract any new buildings or businesses so there should be no more tax abatements. Property owners should pay taxes the day they buy property in West Hollywood. That money is needed for other City Services, including Social Services.

City Council promises Tax Abatements to get Campaign Donations from developers without any concern for how that tax revenue could be used for Residence services.
